Kim's Session With Laura's Style

Last week Kim Corey CEO of Finely Sorted Organizing Service came to my house and helped me organize my drawers. See my blog post titled Getting Organized With Kim. (which inspired me to organize my closet this past weekend. I will write a blog post about that later;) The next day I went to her closet to help her rediscover how to wear what she already has as well as make a list of things she needs to make the most out of her existing wardrobe. Here are some of the things she said about our style session together:

"I was proud of my organized year-round wardrobe of one closet, one dresser and four pairs of shoes.  I could see everything at a glance and had few bells and whistles to complicate function.  My wardrobe was “acceptable” until after perusing her blog, Facebook page and meeting her in person I realized  I was missing out on the fun of clothes and the possibility to be noticed for je ne sais quoi..panache."

     "I never imagined there was a such a local style maven but once I saw her blog and FB posts there was no going back.  Unlike most of what the fashion industry produces her material was both dense in specific how-tos and filled with engaging graphics making it a truly worthwhile source of information and pleasure.  I want to be the same pleasure to the eye as she is when she walks into a room.  Her look incorporates design on many levels; color, texture, material, shimmer, translucence, occasion-specific, tromp l’oeil, fit, layering, accent, current and classic references and more."

     "She began with a sit down session at my kitchen table to make sure we were both on the same page as to who I think I am and who I want to look like, what body type I have and what are my lifestyle habits, who are my style icons and revered designers, how much do I need comfort over image among other things, how my wardrobe would be different at the end of her consult. She typed it into her laptop so that she could send me a complete review of the consult via email because I am averse to paper storage."
     "I am fairly well-versed in some clothing matters from my years as a designer.  I managed to sell my work to two celebrities and editors at Martha Stewart Living Magazine among others.  Further, I lived and travelled to various countries exposing me to multicultural design.  However after spending three hours with Laura I realized because of my desire to be light in possessions to enable spontaneous travel and my preference for organization via minimalism, I have overlooked opportunities for enjoyment and expression.  I had neglected to organize my style.  Style is to things as dance is to movement.  Without the aesthetic appeal, function alone lacks something.  Though I value the efficient function of things I am in love with dance and “a life without love is no life at all.”
     "So I resolved to tap her talents.  I would have a taste of my own medicine.  As a professional organizer I enter clients’ personal spaces as part of  my job.  I examined my wardrobe imagining it through her eyes.  It inspired me to make some major changes even before she came."

Kim showed me some of her favorite pieces in her wardrobe. In her line of work she can dress more casual, but she was looking towards my help to make her appear more professional and stylish yet still continuing to be comfortable.

I love Kim's boho chic jeans!

Kim discovered that more colors actually compliment her skin tone and strawberry blonde hair than she thought. She never gave jewel tones a second glance until now! I brought her a couple of my tops to try so she could see how fabulous she would look for herself. She was amazed!

Style Tip: Always experiment with colors that you normally wouldn't choose when you are out shopping. You never know what you are missing out on!!

Below is a virtual style board that I created for Kim showing her some of her best looks. These looks are not over the top dressy. They are still comfy yet they look professional and pulled together.

Fashion Is For Models. STYLE Is For Real Women.

The fashion world has always favored skinny models to show off the latest trends. But it's the real women who actually buy them. Why does this make sense? Well I guess when it comes right down to the brutal truth, people buy things that look good. And lets face it, clothes look better when they are smaller. It's kind of like when I go into a store to try on shoes and the one on display that I am attracted to is a size 6 or 7 and then the sales clerk brings out my size (9 or 9/2) and I'm like "That's not the same shoe, is it? The one on display looks different!" The clerk tells me that it is in fact the same shoe. Suddenly, I don't want to try it on anymore. So, I just want to tell all you ladies out there who are not a size 4 in a dress that I get it. But we can't let it bother us.  Fashion is everywhere and marketing is everywhere and the majority of it is big beautiful pictures of skinny people. Keep in mind, models in magazines have the b...

FALL for Flowers!

{Leifsdottir Alegrias tiered floral skirt} Totally unpredictable and completely cool. Flowers for fall are exactly what you need to take your "I miss summertime" blues away. There are no rules in fashion. It's just about achieving a look that is your best and that you feel good in. Who says plaid is the only print you can wear in the fall? Now, don't get me wrong. Plaid is one of my favorite patterns. So maybe we can mix them together! {See below} Flower patterns are fun and so glamorous during any season. Just make your floral skirts a little more fall like by wearing a pair of colorful tights! Can you say FLOWER POWER?! And we are going to need some major FLOWER POWER especially when the temperature begins to drastically drop. {Christopher Kane ~ garden leather mini skirt} {Carolina Herrera}

The Necessary Black T-Shirt

I have to admit, I have not been getting dressed up much these days. I think it has something to do with just wanted to be comfortable. I have been sewing a ton of masks at The Maine Square   and it just feels better to not be confined in my clothing as I am cutting fabric and sewing. However, I do have to go out of the studio occasionally. Mostly it's to the mailbox, but sometimes it's to get more supplies and of course food. I don't mean to sound pretentious or anything, but I do think about how I look even when going out to do these quick errands. It makes me feel good to look half decent! Lately I have been opting for a simple black tee shirt and a pair of semi faded jeans. All I need to do it pop on a camel colored blazer and some ballet flats and I am good to go! Oh yeah, and I ALWAYS wear a mask when entering a public facility these days. I think it's just common courtesy with all that is going on with the corona virus.  Here are some of my all-time favori...
