Manly Monday Q & A

On Friday we introduced you to Terry, the most stylish IT guy we know here at Laura's Style. Terry has agreed to partner with us every Manly Monday to answer any manly style questions you may have. Today's Many Monday question comes from Shawn in the lovely state of Maine. Q: Should you tuck in a polo shirt or should you leave it untucked? A: Terry says, " Personally, I think the polo shirt can be worn either tucked in or untucked. The tucked in shirt is dressier and slightly more professional (think casual Fridays at the office), whereas the untucked shirt is for more casual looks (drinks with the office after 5).  There are also polo shirts with longer tails in the back, which are meant to be worn tucked in. The tucked in version {photo via Pinteres t} The untucked version {photo via Lookastic } Personally here at Laura's Style, we are coveting the half tucked look for men. But that is just one woman's opinion. {Photo via: SUITSUPPL...

Introducing The Most Stylish IT Guy I Know.........

Okay ladies. Now it's time to get the men involved. I would like to introduce you to Terry.  Terry is going to be giving a little much needed style advice to men every Monday here on Laura's Style. We are calling it Many Monday and you just might want to share this info at the start of each week with every man you know. We asked Terry ten random questions just so you could get to know him better before Monday rolls around.  LS- Where are you from? T-  I was born in Washington DC, and grew up in Nebraska, Colorado, and Tennessee before graduating high school.  LS- Where do you live now? T-  I currently live in central VA LS- What is the best thing about where you live now? T-  I'm a big city person, but I do like the slower pace of things here in a smaller town.  LS- What book(s) are you reading right now? T-  Not currently reading anything. I'm not much of a reader.  LS- How old were you when you got i...

Wearing Vintage Is Not A Trend. It's a Way Of Thinking.

Some may say that wearing something vintage is considered "trendy." Some people may think that fashionista's call something vintage in order to feel trendy. So, what does vintage really mean? Vintage simply means the date or decade that something was made. In the above photo I am wearing a vintage top from circa 1980. My love for vintage is difficult to explain because it involves a ton of feelings. When I am wearing this heart print flutter sleeve blouse all I can think about is how super cool and totally awesome my sister looked when she wore it. Her nails were long and perfectly painted. (And she did them by herself before people got lazy and nail salons became all the rage. Not that I don't appreciate a good relaxing mani and pedi preformed by someone else on me from time to time. My lack funds just keep me doing mine myself, at least most of the time.) Her hair was feathered and her make up was done to perfection. She was everything I had hoped to become! ...

Making A Statement Will Never Go Out Of Style

You never have to worry about that. Statement jewels will always be in style as long as you make them work with your look. Fashion is very personal and no one should tell you that what you are wearing is "soooo last season." And if they do, then they don't really "get" fashion. They are just in it for the glam and the recognition. Since you are a Laura's Style blog reader, I know you are not one of those posers. And if you are, maybe you are reading this with the intention to dig a little deeper into the world of fashion in order to find out where you belong in it. At least we hope so :) SHOP STATEMENT NECKLACES JavaScript is currently disabled in this browser. Reactivate it to view this content.

The Benefits Of The Peplum

A peplum style top is not only a classic style and so pretty, but it also can hide a multitude of sins. Below you will find some of the benefits of the peplum: 1.) For someone with a boyish figure (straight through the hips with no curves), a peplum can give the appearance of womanly figure. 2.) For someone who has a little extra in the middle, a peplum will totally hide that and make the body appear slim. 3.) If you have a curvy figure, a peplum can help accentuate those beautiful curves. If you've got it, flaunt it! 4.) If you have a long torso, a peplum can give the illusion of a shorter waist and longer legs. Now do you see what a peplum can do for you? Models Are Making A Comeback!

Laura's Style is amazed and completely delighted to see models on the cover of Vogue's 2014 September issue!  Ever since Anna Wintour took over, it seems that Vogue has been promoting celebrities on their covers. We thought that Anna might have been confused and thought she was working for Vanity Fair where it makes sense for celebs to be on the cover.  We hate to debate here at Laura's Style. The last thing we need is a group of haters following us, but Vogue has a special place in our hearts and that is why we feel so strongly about this issue. We used to wall paper our walls with pages from Vogue for goodness sake! When we were growing up in the late 80's and early 90's we used to know all the names of the super models. Our favorite was Nadja Auerman. She had legs longer than we were tall!  Then of course there were these girls. Remember any of them? I am sure you do.   We are so happy that today's supermodels are taking back ...

Take The Scenic Route!

Happy Friday! The Laura's Style gals were lucky enough to be able to visit the gorgeous Samoset resort in Rockland Maine again this summer. What a vacation! This place is so beautiful and relaxing. It is a land where everything is perfect and you can feel free to kick back and enjoy the scenery. This was the view from our room. Spectacular! And when we spotted this skirt from Chicwish we couldn't help but dream about our vacation. We wish we were still there enjoying the scenery. Wearing this skirt means that we could keep that vacation front of mind and maybe we could help someone else escape for a minute or two as they enjoy the view. Precious PEARLS!

JavaScript is currently disabled in this browser. Reactivate it to view this content. Let's face it. Pearls go with EVERYTHING. They can take a look from casual to dressed up in an instant. They are the most called upon accessory for every women, especially those who have a hard time "dressing up." They know that they can always count on pearls to do that for them. Watch the video below for a few ideas on the types of pearl necklaces you may want to own. If anything, you should have at least one simple single strand of pearls in your jewelry box. That's our opinion. We welcome yours! SHOP PEARLS JavaScript is currently disabled in this browser. Reactivate it to view this content.

Maxi Dresses. Do They Make Sense For Summer?

It's HOT outside. So why do women choose a trend like maxi dresses to wear in this mid summer heat? That is what our favorite street fashion photographer Bill Cunningham is asking.  Little does Bill know, maxi dresses are actually cool. They may skim the pavement, but they are loose fitting and flowy so they let air in and keep it moving. The other thing that we love about maxi dresses is that they cover a multitude of sins. I know that I don't really dislike my legs but they really are not all that tan, so if I can hide them vs going through the whole process of putting on my Sally Hansen airbrush legs tanning lotion, I'm gonna hide them. At least for one day. A girl needs a break once in a while. Below are a few of our favorite maxi dresses of the season: JavaScript is currently disabled in this browser. Laura's Style Must Have Of The Moment!

A light weight denim shirt A light weight denim shirt never goes out of style. We consider it a wardrobe must! You can wear it with the most dressy pants or skirt for a bit of an edgy look, with any color pants, jeans or skirt (right now we prefer orange;) or with any pair of blue jeans. Yes we said blue jeans. Despite what the fashion world has told you in the past, denim worn with denim can actually be cool if you do it right. We also love a longer style lightweight denim shirt worn over a bathing suit as a cover up.  SHOP DENIM SHIRTS JavaScript is currently disabled in this browser. Reactivate it to view this content.

Less In The Closet Means More To Wear!

{photo via Arnold's Walk-In Closet } You know what people say. Less is more! Well, how can that be? Especially when it comes to your closet.  I turned forty last month and let me tell you, I feel fantastic. I mean, I feel the same. I think. Well, maybe a bit more accomplished than I was at the age of twenty. But I still don't feel like I am where I want to be in my life. Will I ever feel that? I guess I'll just keep living and find out! So what does any of the above paragraph have to do with the closet? Well as you know, this is a fashion blog and I am a stylist. And now that I have lived it, I feel that I can give you the type of fashion advice that I am about to write.  When you are in your twenties you begin seeing a faint light of who you are and what you put into your wardrobe reflects that. You feel proud of your wardrobe choices. Mini skirts, cutesy lacy stuff, skinny pants, cropped jackets etc. You now proudly own the trendy wardrobe of a twent...

Jamming With Jamberry

By now you have probably heard of Jamberry . And if you haven't, maybe you should take a moment to read the article below: Still skeptical about applying Jamberry nails? We were too until we tried it for ourselves. It's easier than we thought and takes less time than actually painting your nails because the drying time is eliminated completely. Personally we are loving the look of having one Jamberry nail for an accent while still painting the others, but we have seen so many other cool versions of Jamberry nails in our travels. Check out our favorites below!

What Is Transitional Dressing?

Well, we promised that we wouldn't talk about the f word ( fall ) during the month of August here at Laura's Style, but we never said anything about the word transitional . What is transitional dressing you ask? Transitional dressing is dressing for the in-between seasons. It happens at the end of winter as we come upon spring and at the end of summer as we ease into  fall . How do you dress for the transition? Well, we say you just try to go more neutral. Blush pink and gray seem to be one of our favorite transitional color schemes of the moment. The perfect color combination to wear during the in-between . Modern & Easy Scarf Ties!

The European tie. I left my ends out just to be different unlike the girl in the video below. Why the serious expression you ask? I don't know. It's just me today :) We love scarves at Laura's Style and we know you do too. So why don't we wear them? Some people tell us that scarves are too difficult to wear. We are here to tell you that they don't have to be! Just get that perfectionist voice out of your head and free your mind! Watch this video for a few cool new scarf tying techniques. Try them for yourself and see how easy they are. These scarf ties were designed for the modern day woman. None of us have a ton of time to just stand in front of the mirror and style ourselves. If we have an hour to ourselves in the morning, we are lucky! These scarf ties take all of maybe one minute to achieve. Thank goodness, because thats about all the time that we have! Today's Lovely Look!

It's not too late to wear your seersucker jacket! What is seersucker, you ask? Seersucker is a classic fabric typically worn by men, women and children in the summer months because it's light weight. It's made of a thin puckered all cotton material and it is woven in such a way that some threads bunch together giving the fabric a wrinkled effect. This feature helps keep the fabric away from the skin therefore keeping you a little cooler. No ironing necessary! You've gotta love that! SHOP THE LOOK! Laura's Style August Inspiration

{Laura's Style August Inspiration Board} August sometimes gets a bad rep. We tend to see it as a month where summer fun is coming to an end. In that case I say live it up and make the most of the heat while it lasts! August is a fantastic month to take a vacation. Drag it on as long as you can! Below are few things that remind us of Summer. Some of these things totally take us back to our childhood. Such as the friendship necklace and bracelets that we used to give to our besties, the ice cream shop we used to work at and the bike with the basket in front that we used to cruise around on. You get the idea. What's old doesn't have to fade. We say, what's old is new again! JavaScript is currently disabled in this browser. Reactivate it to view this content. Oh, and we promise to not mention a thing about the f word  (fall)  until September rolls around. Let's live for now and save the future for just that! Celebrate SUMMER with me! SHOP MY...

Love, Life & The Pursuit Of Happiness

Today just might be the first day of the rest of my life. Or at least the first day of totally thinking differently. I am now blogging with a whole new outlook on love, life and the  pursuit  of happiness. And believe me, YOU have everything to do with that.  I bring to you this new and improved Laura's Style Fashion blog with the intent of inspiring you to  experiment with something new every day. You know what that means? I will be updating this blog five days a week beginning next Monday August 11th. It will be a challenge for me since I am a one woman show at this very moment. But I will be working hard at building Laura's Style into a team of passionate fashionistas like myself. I have gone through my life feeling alone in this lonely world of fashion and style, which is not so lonely once you leave the state of Maine. However, I believe that I am meant to be here. To bring you, my fellow Mainer, a sense of appreciation for fashion, culture a...
