Denim in Vogue.....and in Laura's Style

Denim in Vogue.......
{Michaela Bercu for Vogue. November 1988}
..........and in Laura's Style
Do you think editor in chief of  American Vogue, Anna Wintour, made it okay to mix denim with more refined garments after she paired a Christian Lacroix sweater with a pair of acid washed jeans on the November 1988 cover of Vogue? Model, Michaela Bercu, (very top photo) was too chubby to fit into the matching Lacroix skirt. (Btw, she was prego. The model that is;) So, does Anna Wintour get the credit for the mix and match look, or is this something that had been going on for years? Maybe she gets the credit for being brave enough to mix a $2000 designer sweater with a $50 pair of jeans and maybe she gets the credit for putting it on the cover of Vogue. But I believe that women who love fashion have been mixing and matching for years. I for one love denim. There is just something about putting something rough with something smooth, something dull with something shiny and something old with something new. Denim brings out the best in all of those smooth, shiny and new things.

Here is a look at a few of Laura's Style denim mix and match looks through the years:

Never be afraid to wear your "dressed up" items with denim. You know what they say. Opposites attract! Now go mix it up!

Fashion Is For Models. STYLE Is For Real Women.

The fashion world has always favored skinny models to show off the latest trends. But it's the real women who actually buy them. Why does this make sense? Well I guess when it comes right down to the brutal truth, people buy things that look good. And lets face it, clothes look better when they are smaller. It's kind of like when I go into a store to try on shoes and the one on display that I am attracted to is a size 6 or 7 and then the sales clerk brings out my size (9 or 9/2) and I'm like "That's not the same shoe, is it? The one on display looks different!" The clerk tells me that it is in fact the same shoe. Suddenly, I don't want to try it on anymore. So, I just want to tell all you ladies out there who are not a size 4 in a dress that I get it. But we can't let it bother us.  Fashion is everywhere and marketing is everywhere and the majority of it is big beautiful pictures of skinny people. Keep in mind, models in magazines have the b...

FALL for Flowers!

{Leifsdottir Alegrias tiered floral skirt} Totally unpredictable and completely cool. Flowers for fall are exactly what you need to take your "I miss summertime" blues away. There are no rules in fashion. It's just about achieving a look that is your best and that you feel good in. Who says plaid is the only print you can wear in the fall? Now, don't get me wrong. Plaid is one of my favorite patterns. So maybe we can mix them together! {See below} Flower patterns are fun and so glamorous during any season. Just make your floral skirts a little more fall like by wearing a pair of colorful tights! Can you say FLOWER POWER?! And we are going to need some major FLOWER POWER especially when the temperature begins to drastically drop. {Christopher Kane ~ garden leather mini skirt} {Carolina Herrera}

The Necessary Black T-Shirt

I have to admit, I have not been getting dressed up much these days. I think it has something to do with just wanted to be comfortable. I have been sewing a ton of masks at The Maine Square   and it just feels better to not be confined in my clothing as I am cutting fabric and sewing. However, I do have to go out of the studio occasionally. Mostly it's to the mailbox, but sometimes it's to get more supplies and of course food. I don't mean to sound pretentious or anything, but I do think about how I look even when going out to do these quick errands. It makes me feel good to look half decent! Lately I have been opting for a simple black tee shirt and a pair of semi faded jeans. All I need to do it pop on a camel colored blazer and some ballet flats and I am good to go! Oh yeah, and I ALWAYS wear a mask when entering a public facility these days. I think it's just common courtesy with all that is going on with the corona virus.  Here are some of my all-time favori...
